Horoscopes for the 12 signs

Welcome to my general overview of what the cosmos may have in store for us for 2008, and with such a healthy dose of planets in “earth” signs it is no surprise that we are entering “The International Year of Planet Earth”.

But don't' expect the new years fireworks to give us the call to action as the early weeks of 2008 dawn, as with retrograde Mars being a feature of the horoscope for 2008 (set for January 1 st 00. 00 Greenwich), the enterprising spirit in each of us may be a little slow to get off the ground. Indeed with Mars in Cancer around the festive season it will be a very family affair… for better or worse depending on your family! Mars governs all things to do with action, initiation, assertion (or anger if he's unhappy), courage and confidence. So until he moves into forward motion (literally) on January 30 th it is wise to spend the month setting up your plans for the year, and generally connecting and networking with the people and information you need to set the balls in the rack and get the cue out once February rolls in.

A Little Touch of Numerology…

Also worthy of a major mention as we begin our analysis of the year ahead is the Numerology at work in the Divine Arithmetic that governs us all. 2007 = 9 so we have just experienced the final year of this past 9 year cycle. So as we completed the last 6 weeks of 2007 with both Mars retrograde and the 9 year winding down, don't feel bad if you joined so many of us who threw our hands in the air and conceded that we were just too pooped to fight the urge to wind down, throw out, release the past, and generally loose the plot. Which is not to say this is a depressing phase. On the contrary… as I feel quite excited about the future…for the first time in ages!

2008 = 10 = 1 Yes 2008 is a “one” year thus a new 9 year phase is about to open, and as with any opening it sometimes takes a while to begin to feel the stirrings of activity, which will not really begin to kick in until April when Mars in Cancer finally gets a scoot on and picks up speed to move past his position last November. More about Mars in the following section…

Jupiter and Saturn in Earth Signs…

We'll be passing through a very interesting juxtaposition of planetary forces during 2008 as the 2 big societal planets Jupiter (12 year cycle) and Saturn (29 year cycle) spend the year in the earthy signs of Capricorn and Virgo respectively. The promise here holds very positive potential for implementation of major new structures and organisation on behalf of both environmental and socio-political groups. This follows on from their placements in Sagittarius and Leo last year allowing the lid off the pressure cooker as everyone finally got around to talking about the fact that our planet is in dire environmental straits.

This accords with the election of a new Labour Government here in Oz committed to getting on with the business of signing the Kyoto Accord and setting goals for greenhouse gas emissions and other environmental issues relevant not only to our own country, but also to join with international efforts. In the words of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon “We are on the verge of a catastrophe – everywhere are disturbing signs of climate change's effects”. On a positive note I am heartened to see “Go Green – Working towards a cleaner future” advertising supplements now appearing as regular features in newspapers. This reminds us that commerce and industry are recognising that people now expect to be given the products necessary to “do their bit”, and that companies realise that future profits involve this fundamental shift in awareness.

Mars and Pluto Standoff…

The other pair of boys in the mix making for a very different ingredient in the 2008 Horoscope are Mars (2 year cycle) and Pluto (246 year cycle) forming an opposition (yes that's what the aspect is called and the name tells all) at the 29 th degree of Gemini and Sagittarius respectively. Known as the “Anorectic Degree” (I have always called this the anorexic degree!) 29 degrees of any sign is the final “moment” before it enters the next sign. Thus it offers the opportunity to complete any issues inherent in the signs involved. In this case Pluto will move into Capricorn on January 27 th heralding the commencement of a new 16 year journey through this sign. (More about this momentous event in the Pluto section below.)

This Mars (God of War) Pluto (Lord of the Underworld) standoff is threatening to say the least, issuing in another year of enormous tension between global factions on the international (Sagittarius) stage. Mars Gemini/Pluto Sagittarius is literally a “war of words” at an international level, and may involve major standoffs between factions of all types; political, commercial and ideological. Collectively I hope this also means that individuals begin to speak out more clearly on behalf of both their own and our community interest in working toward a sustainable future. The Australian people just did this on November 24 th when they clearly said “no” to the old world view offered by John Howard's Liberal Party and “yes” to the current view offered by Kevin Rudd's Labour Party; that we are all in this together and there is no longer any room for separatist view points.

The Moon in the 2008 Horoscope falls in Libra forming a challenging square aspect to the Sun in Capricorn. This tells us of the absolute necessity for diplomatic and peace keeping activity both globally and personally. We need to see the word PEACE all over the place so get yourself a bumper sticker and use the word as much as you can. Remember the “Hundredth Monkey Principle”… if enough of us do something positive then eventually the collective will “get it”!

A Quick Rundown on Mars Placements for 2008

By May 10 th as Mr. Mover and Shaker enters Leo you can expect to finally get excited! Freed from his family and safety concerns he can now express the passion and power he is famous for. On a global level leaders of all types will be front stage with dramatic developments for better or worse depending on the leader! By July and August he moves into Virgo with a call to use your energy organising and systemizing your projects and life in general. He joins Saturn in Virgo on July 11 th so globally this feature may include any or all of the features I outline in the Virgo section below. From mid August he heads into Libra bringing relationship areas into focus…remember what I just said about the Moon in Libra…”Peace be with you”. Early October sees Mars move into Scorpio, always a touchy placement as security/control issues raise their nasty heads, so use this phase to send your desire nature toward things that release tensions rather than holding old positions. He completes his passage for the year in Sagittarius from mid November. A great period for positive self expression and optimistic growth…and of course travel to far horizons.

Jupiter passes through Capricorn

On both a personal and collective level Jupiter represents the following:

Common values or belief systems - the law and religion - the monarchy or highest authority in the land - the courts, Churches, charities - the higher mind thus universities, publishing, philosophy, and philanthropy. It has links with national wealth and hence with prosperity, wealth, the rich, banks and the financial life of a society.

Jupiter's 12 year cycle means he spends just over a year in each sign. He entered Capricorn on December 19th 2007 until January 6 th 2009. He commenced his last cycle in February 1999 when he entered Aries and a new 12 year Jupiter process began to unfold. This led us into the Millennium at 2000 as a new century also began its unfoldment…interesting synchronicity. So as he spends the next year in Capricorn he triggers the waning square (90 degree) phase in the cycle signaling the “crisis of re-orientation” that arises at this point in any cycle. What was sewn is now fully ready for expression with the accompanying realization that the cycle is nearly spent, and from 2009 and 2010 fresh ideals and dreams for the future must be seeded before he commences his new cycle in Aries from January 2011.

Personally this means that we are all ready to reap what we have sown…or not reap as the case may be. This is a year when your ambitions are ready for fulfillment and hard work will bear great fruit. So put a spring in your step as you dare to strive as never before making sure that your goals are realistic and involve the good of all concerned. Capricorn can provoke raw ambition with a “use them” kind of attitude…definitely the unconscious goat at work. Make sure you use this cycle to manifest concrete outcomes that allow room for everyone you encounter to “win” as you also “win”. If you do this you set the tone for a more conscious collective outcome.

Capricorn is highly activated this year with Jupiter joining Pluto… also entering Capricorn in ‘08 for the next 16 years. As Jupiter expands and propels forward the themes and activities of any planet or sign, it appears then, that the deep transformational forces necessary to re-shape the geo-political and commercial affairs of our world will receive a ‘big kick in the pants' to get the ball rolling in 2008. “Corporate Governance” is the term that springs to mind here, as Governments, institutions and companies begin to be forced to take responsibility for their role in the use or mis-use of the powers they hold. Expect to see the best and worse of this scenario reveal itself in the year ahead. On the one hand we will see voluntary execution of policies and reforms that enhance the positive growth of the relationship between the industrial machine and the environmental outcomes to date. On the other hand we may see vagrant exhibition of the lack of care and responsibility re: the same. In the same way that Jupiter in Sagittarius over the past year has placed neon signs around the religious tolerance/intolerance theme of Sagittarius, this same principle can be applied to Capricorn.

Until Governments create legislation that hold companies responsible for their environmental and societal morality we cannot expect to experience the necessary checks and balances so integral to taking care of this planet and her people. The Jupiter ‘expansionist' principle may also bring an even greater level of “takeovers” as the global industrial complex moves toward “globalization” in ever greater measure. As a response to this we will see many individuals splinter off into de-centralization of their business activities. In the following section on Saturn in Virgo I will highlight the relationship between Jupiter and Saturn and develop this idea.

Jupiter and Saturn represent the social and philosophical level of human existence - the institutions and the power men who control them. Their most recent cycle of 20 years (Synod) began in May 2000 in the sign of Taurus. Taurus rules value systems, money and resources. Thus the theme of the period between 2000 and 2020 involves the use, mis-use and diminishing resources that underpin the planetary consumption equation. In 2006 they formed a waxing (developmental) square aspect (90 degree) and the tension regarding this resources issue began to reveal itself… yes Scarlet there is not enough oil to last as long as we thought! In 2007 Saturn/Jupiter formed a waxing Trine (ease aspect) in Leo and Sagittarius respectively. This showed us (with ease) the nature of the ideas and philosophies regarding ‘resources' (or lack of them) being offered by our Leaders (Leo). Independently of federal Governments some local government and industry began to implement new strategies and policies to deal with the ‘real' issues confronting our planet… e.g. governor Arnold Schwarzenegger defying the US federal system and getting on with major reforms in California…true leadership regardless of your politics. This phase also brought us the huge growth in global share/stock markets, but with a fundamental flaw also becoming apparent…the credit systems are actually very shaky, and this may indeed lead to a drastic overhaul by March 2011 when they form the opposition in the 20 year cycle (and Saturn squares Pluto).

This year they again form a trine aspect (ease) but in earth signs. Saturn is the Lord of Capricorn the sign Jupiter occupies. Jupiter is not particularly comfortable in earthy Virgo as he is a full on kind of guy, so may struggle with the more disciplined component of what Virgo is trying to teach us. However their dance in '08 assures us that for the first time in many a year we may actually end up with some constructive outcomes for all the talk that's gone over the last years.

Saturn continues his passage through Virgo (begun September 2007)

On both a personal and collective level Saturn represents the following:

The institutions that distinguish order from chaos - the amount of freedom permitted or denied - the legal system, permanent civil service, all conservative and restraining bodies - repressive and controlling forces - attitude to law and order, hierarchies, taboos and old practices - reactionary forces and fears that resist change - authority and tradition

I like to spend a moment reviewing the cycle of Saturn so we may gain a better perspective of his passage through the signs sequentially, before we head off into looking at his potential in Virgo over the next few years. Saturn entered the initiatory sign Aries in 1996 commencing his new cycle. He returns to Aries in 2025 so that's about 29 years for his full cycle around the Sun. So in 1996 a new “structural” planetary process commenced, and we have just completed stage 5 of this process as Saturn passed through Leo from July '05 until September '07. During this phase we were all meant to confront our personal fears and limitations to do with our ability to be “individuals” and to open our passion and creativity so this may occur. I trust this was the case for you dear reader!

Saturn commenced his 2 year run through Virgo September 3 rd 2007 and remains until October 30 th 2009. As the 6 th sign in the Zodiacal process it is now time for us all to organise and create systems so we may further develop our potential birthed in 1996. This may be also called the Gibbous phase in any cycle, during which we must deal with our ability to focus our attention to daily systems, routines and health…the small matters that underpin all our endeavors if we are to further progress to the potential unfoldment due when he enters Libra in 2010. This confronts us with whether we are very good at doing this or not. For those who are a bit like air/fire sign me then this holds a greater challenge than for the earth/water types who are naturally more inclined this way in the first place! Generally it is time to cleanup, cleanout and implement strategies for organisation.

If you are a list writer then you will have a field day! If you are not then perhaps you may need to learn to create ways to manage your life in other ways, but the principle of practical protocols is across the board. Conversely if you are somewhat “anal” and overly critical or limit yourself and others by being a perfectionist, you may need to re-structure this facet of your psyche to allow greater flexibility. Personally I have been having a little obsessive compulsive “moment” in recent weeks…cleaning, cleaning and lots of old things have gone off to re-cycle and distribute around the community. Feel's great, and I sense there is lots more of this to come over the next 2 years! This is the time to go to the Accountant and get all your financial affairs in order…yuk…but do it!!

One of Virgo's favourite words is “patience”. Perhaps this placement offers us all a chance to slow down and start to smell the roses… by the way roses are associated with the heart chakra…love! The information revolution of recent years combined with the pressures of surviving in the jungle have led many people to the brink of sanity with little time for ‘living' the life they work so hard to support. So make like a “virgin” my friends and learn patience. Your process this year will be much better served if you take your time and say no to those who try to rush you and your results. The shadow sign of Virgo is Pisces where we encounter our ability (or lack of it) to flow, trust and allow our creative imagination to fertilise our psyche so that Saturn in Virgo can then get to work and create practical outcomes from this. If you are too locked into your current systems then this may not be able to occur. Remember we have to ‘dream' before something can come into form. It is Virgo that gives form to all things at the most basic level.

Virgo is the sign of health and wholeness. As Saturn's principle contains constraint, limitation and restructure we can expect some hard truths to come to light regarding a number of areas that come under his dominion whilst he is in the realm of Virgo. So let's tackle these point by point…

1. Our food sources and nutrition. These areas necessarily go hand in hand as our nutrition has everything to do with what we eat. After recent focus on how overweight and un-healthy so many people from the ‘developed' nations are whilst those in 3 rd world areas are starving, Saturn in Virgo will bring these issues front and centre. The “Organics Movement” of the past decades will gather great momentum, as the dedicated folks who have labored to teach us of the dangers of current food production practices finally begin to get their message home. I am reminded of the ridicule heaped upon Prince Charles for his love of ‘talking to the plants'. Well the joke is on us as his Duchy of Cornwall leads the world in companion planting and organic production. Join an organics co-op or grow your own will begin to become commonplace. This in turn will force the growers and big food distribution networks to re-think their priorities. Tougher regulations re: food package labeling will also come through. As the Goddess Demeter is known as “The Goddess of Grain” Saturn in Virgo may bring famine to areas that may not have experienced this before, be this through global warming with further droughts/floods and general mayhem or some kind of “contamination” of food sources may also occur in various regions of the globe through “fall-out” or infestation. In Australia the genetically modified food agenda is already back on the front burner with various states making their decisions on this matter, for better or for worse depending on your point of view. Hopefully we may finally see a collective shift begin to occur in personal health as people begin to take responsibility for their food intake and health outcomes. Which leads me to point 2.

2. Personal health and the medical industry as a whole. In recent years the Allopathic (traditional) medical professions have been greatly challenged by the alternative movement on the rise since the 1960s. The polarization between the two basic philosophies of Allopathic… get a pill from the doctor and take no responsibility for the origins of your own disease; versus the Naturopathic wholistic philosophy…we are a complete organism made up of body/mind/spirit; now needs to head closer to resolution and integration. Wholistic medicine offers the reality that our thoughts create our reality thus unconscious emotional energy underpins all disease patterns. I am truly hoping that this philosophy begins to come through into mainstream awareness thus allowing us all to move forward in this most important of areas. If this were to occur it could cause a crisis in the pharmaceutical industries. Various conspiracy theories tell us that they manufacture drugs that help us stay sick because of the various side effects. A big subject and a major can of worms that I choose not to open here. Whichever way you look at it avoiding synthetic drugs is a very good idea!

One of the pledges of our new Government is to ‘clean-up' the public hospital services mess and begin to deal with staffing and facility issues. And as Saturn in Virgo is about the whole planet not just Australia , then it will be interesting to see what comes through in the U.S.A. where their health system is so horribly wrong in terms of social conscience. Until Governments take back the power they have given to private industry to make money out of public health, we can never begin to return to a fair deal for all. The whole philosophy around medicine and medical training needs a drastic overhaul if we are to attract a new batch of people to the field who are inspired by the humanistic healing ideals, rather than a régime which by and large ‘kills' the ideals of people in the industry as they are overwhelmed by the current system and it's inadequacies.

On the up-side and as a result of this phase we can expect to see many announcements over the next few years of spectacular developments in the Medical Sciences. If it appears that I have a rather negative attitude to Allopathic medicine then please forgive me, as I also respect and admire the field for the incredible options it makes available to us for treatment of accident and injury. Saturn also rules the principle of building and re-building so many new techniques will arrive shortly. And then there is the bio-medical field with gene splicing and growing for organ replacement and so on. This also will move ahead in a serious fashion in the next few years. The moral issues remain to be debated, and as usual I am reminded of the incredible irony in this area. What “creatures” are we destined to create? I am amused by the idea than in the distant past our friends from distant stars wondered the same thing? And did they get it right??

In the mid 1960's when Saturn was in Pisces and Uranus opposite in Virgo the World Health Organisation implemented a 10 year plan to immunize globally for the classic 3 killer diseases; polio/typhoid/diphtheria . By and large they succeeded, which incidentally led to the exponential growth in world populations in the following decades. As Saturn and Uranus oppose each other this year it will be interesting to see what WHO and other groups begin to implement over the next few years. Another co-incidence from the mid 1960s under the Saturn/Uranus opposition was the evolution of the Psychiatric models into the more wholistic psychotherapies. This advancement emerged as awareness extended to integration of the spiritual component of our nature, and led to a more integrative approach to mental and physical health. So again I would say that the Psychotherapies may become more wide spread in their application to mental health as the “medicate them and/or lock them up” attitude is challenged. Generally mental health in the community will come back onto the front burner as our society grapples with re-instating support services.

The sign of Saturn's placement at any time is always reflected in the media and entertainment offerings, so for the past few years with Saturn in Leo we have “Dancing with the Stars” and so on. So what's to come with Saturn in Virgo… “Dancing with your Doctor”??

3. “Earth” based environmental function. Well get ready for “being green” to become not only popular but the only way to go. Within the next few years it will be quite the norm to compare notes about what kind of solar heating system and how you re-cycle your water at the Sunday B-B-Q. Environmental organisations will be springing up all over the place…and not before time! But I guess it is actually the perfect time as Saturn's transits always bring us exactly what we need when we need it! The thing here is to make sure you use Virgo's discernment function to make sure that what you think you are getting is actually what you are getting. Oil companies jumped on the band wagon in the last few years assuring us all that they are responsible and credible when it comes to the environment. But are they really? This is what we now all need to be very aware of…accountability and credibility. In the “biz” this is known as ”Greenwash” - looking good but all talk and no action. Perhaps this echoes back to the Mars in Gemini opposite Pluto in Capricorn signature of the 2008 chart is briefly discussed at the beginning of this article. It is time for us to stop talking and start acting!!!!!

Big subjects such as Carbon Trading, (how big is your “Carbon Footprint”?) and other means of offering incentive for industry and private individuals to “go green” are set to occupy the airwaves. But we must be so careful (another favourite Virgo word) of quite who we support to do quite what. The trine from Saturn in Virgo to Jupiter in Capricorn also means that we need to educate ourselves about different environmental implications before we decide to get on a particular bandwagon.

4. Regulatory systems of all kinds. Virgo rules “systems” both internally and externally; from the bio-sphere with its' self regulatory system that we see currently breaking down, be that from mankind's industry or a combination of this and a natural phase in our planet's history where the “system” is due to move into a new phase. It is only 12,000 years or so since the end of the last ice-age when people were free to begin to migrate leading to a new epoch. So be it causal or natural the system and its self regulatory ability is shifting. May we have to begin to have a serious look at the current situation and begin to plan for the great changes that will occur when sea levels began to rise? The implications are enormous but must be confronted head on. Huge investment must occur here in Australia to re-create basic infrastructure systems of water distribution and don't be surprised if we have a “Department of Water” in the near future. Expect major re-structures of all types of governmental and corporate ‘systems'. The goal here should involve simplifying the red-tape that drives so many people to distraction and limits productive output. This leads to Point 5.

5. Public Service and Social Welfare. Virgo's keyword is service and it would be very nice if more people actually came to the realization that we are all here to serve each other and the planet. Once again we may expect to see current limitations in all levels of service industries revealed. Social Welfare systems are in for a major overhaul and we already have a statement from our new PM that “in a country as wealthy as ours it is ridiculous that people are sleeping on the streets”. From what I hear the welfare system in the US is already stretched, so this issue will become a hot potato there as well I am sure.

6. Other Associations with Virgo. “Small animals” in particular but all the kingdoms of nature deserve a much better deal from humanity than we have offered thus far. Animal rights groups will become much more vocal; live meat exports and endangered species will all gain much greater sympathy I am sure in the next few years. And then there is “Slaves” ; a very traditional connection with Virgo. With global production benefiting hugely from what is basically slave labour in the ‘sweat shops' of Asia and the Middle East I look forward to this area also beginning to be addressed. Legislation is needed to prohibit corporate profits arising from these Mediaeval practices!

Saturn in Virgo opposes Uranus in Pisces in their 45 year cycle… November '08, February and September '09, and April 2010. This is the opposition from their conjunction in Sagittarius in 1988. Within a year they both entered Capricorn and joined Neptune for a triple conjunction, culminating in the Berlin Wall coming down as a symbol for the end of the cold war. Corporate systems would be jolted into an exponential growth phase by the Dot-Com revolution and the collective become ‘connected' as never before. Welcome to Universal Reality…We Are All One!

The previous conjunction was in 1942 at 29 degrees Taurus in the midst of the darkest days of the war years. For the next 3 years as they passed through Gemini we witnessed the remarkable advent of the technologies that led to the industrial development of the 50s and beyond… radar, first generation computers, rockets, telecommunications and more. These all have associations with Gemini. So 66 years and 2 full cycles later that which was seeded in 1942 is ready for the full potential to be released out into the collective. Saturn anchors the inventive revolutionary and inventive forces of Uranus. Their third last opposition was in 1918 1919 and 1920. This is the period when they ‘carved up' Europe after WWI, with the disastrous outcome of a Germany burdened with debt who then happily responded to Hitler's promises to give them back their former glory. When Uranus entered Aries in 1927 for his fresh 84 year cycle the ‘roaring 20s' came to a hideous end with the great depression of 1929 and beyond and over those years the European “dictators” emerged. I offer these dates to illustrate the enormous implications of these two planets and their cycle together.

Their most recent opposition occurred in 1964 1965 and 1966 as Uranus made conjunction with Pluto. We still call the 60s revolutionary many remarkable events occurred during this time:

Rock and roll culture - the Beatles, Rolling Stones and eventually Woodstock - The popular use of Eastern philosophies and mystic ideas and practices brought through by Alan Watts and Ram Das (Richard Alpert) - The flowering of the drug culture as hallucinogens arrive courtesy of the chemists! Timothy Leary heads a group of Harvard professors who openly experimented with LSD and reported on the positive mind and behaviour altering effects; the Government illegalised these mind altering substances but a whole generation of youth embraced them - New era in hard line US politics after the death of Kennedy and the suppression of his reforms leading to the Vietnam War and resultant moratorium against war and youth culture revolt against existing values - The development of depth psychology and psychotherapy by Perls, Reich, Rogers and many others; a new paradigm leading to the opening of wholistic medicine during the 1970s - The World Health organisation implements a 10 year program for the eradication of polio/typhoid/diphtheria - resultant goal achievement increases world population exponentially in subsequent decades leading to current scary levels - Kennedy announces US goal to have man on the Moon by 1970 and this is achieved in 1969; this symbolises a further quantum leap similar to the discovery of the telescope - Technology escalates quickly as computer technology opens the commercial potential globally as never before - End of the post Victorian era with opening of taboos around sexuality - Cold War between Russia and the US escalates as the two world polarised positions antagonise; a reflection of the antagonism which exists Science and God - The escalation in the Nuclear Arms Race - very Uranus/Pluto!

So 40 years later may we expect the next phase of this “revolution” to begin to unfold? Uranus upsets the Saturnine status quo birthing new forms on the way. As “the chickens have now come home to roost” we are now way behind schedule for the major reforms required for planetary repair. Many of those born in the mid 1960s will be integral in bringing through these reforms and must be supported to do so. They are the “healers” and "re-organisers” of the planet who will lead the way.

Chiron continues through Aquarius…5 year period

Chiron entered Aquarius in '05 and will be here until 2010. The “Wounded Healer” is set to bring many social issues to the forefront that have been simmering since the last cycle in the 1950s. Racial prejudice, inhumane practices like slavery and mis-use of the animal kingdom will all become political platforms that galvanise individuals to participate in reform and change. Chiron in the sign of humanity offers us healing at a larger group/societal level, but first it has to expose the fact that humanity has yet to realise we are all in this together in the years to come.

Uranus continues through Pisces…7 year period

On both a personal and collective level Uranus represents the following:

It rules political revolutions, economic change, strikes, political dissidents, wars (where these represent a breakdown of order), reforms, heavy industry, new technology, and all those who promote such ideas and events. Uranus rules technology, science, internet technology and inventions of all kinds.

Uranus has been electrifying his way through Pisces since 2003 and will enter Aries to begin his new 84 year cycle in 2010. So far his revolutionary impulse has been very busy bringing us all kinds of natural cataclysms involving water (Pisces). We are in a water crisis globally…either too much or not enough it would appear. The War on Terror is also a very Uranian affair as we have moved into a new kind of global war experience. During 2006 Jupiter in Scorpio formed a “trine” or ease aspect to our Sky God. We saw many positive developments of science and technology toward solving the water crisis. Uranus formed a square aspect with Jupiter in Sagittarius three times in 2007 bringing a further wave of IT technology to allow global sharing of knowledge. In 2008 Uranus makes aspect with Neptune in Aquarius highlighting the “Mutual Reception” of these 2 planets during this 7 year period. Please refer to my article at www.universalastrology.com.au for a full article on this subject. Uranus in Pisces is opposed by Saturn in Virgo in November 2008 and February & September 2009 & April 2010. I have discussed this in the previous section.

Neptune continues through Aquarius…14 year period

On both a personal and collective level Neptune represents the following:

Rules socialism, and all new visions and dreams - rule delusions and therefore disillusion, glamour, the arts, fashion, a nation's self image - it rules oil - also rules scandals, confusion and deceptions

Neptune continues his slow glide through Aquarius where he has been resident since 1998 and will be until 2012…the magic date that marks the end of the Mayan Calendar. This placement is responsible for the general call for increased conscious spiritual awareness of recent years. However the “fundamentalist right” is also on the ascendancy, and it would appear that the lessons of tolerance and unification are yet to be learnt. Neptune governs the pressure within the ‘group psyche' toward a collective dream or ideal that is inclusive and non-separative. It is also the factor that allows groups of people to be easily influenced by a glamour or deception. In 2007 Saturn in Leo opposed Neptune in Aquarius and the true implications of the deceptive nature of our political and corporate icons became apparent. We experienced the first stage of the new global oil shortages with resultant price rises. Please refer to 2007 report at my website for further details.

Pluto enters Capricorn for the next 16 years.

On both a personal and collective level Pluto represents the following:

“All things hidden and secretive in a society - the shadow of the collective - sewerage workers and archeologists, to the more sinister level of the secret police, organised crime, all self destructive urges and impulses - the principle of death and rebirth and the healing principle which forces the collective, as an organic whole, to experience violent phases of self healing, in order to become well again.”

Pluto contains both the positive and negative aspect of the principle of re-ordering and rebirth inherent in all seeds. Pluto by transit brings up the hurt, repressed, denied aspects of the sign and offers us an opportunity to renew these qualities. As Pluto regulates the cycles of nature in all senses, his presence by transit brings us into accord that all things have their seasons…everything must live and die so it may be born again. Under his influence we are meant to release things and allow them to die so we can invite the next cycle of birth into our lives.

The Pluto Cycle and some historical correlations…

The 248 year Pluto cycle offers us the slowest of the larger rhythms (the others being Uranus and Neptune) that regulate human society and the evolution of earth and the biosphere. This current cycle commenced as he entered Aries in April 1822; a time marking the end of an epoch as Napoleon was dismissed and the world awaited the Victorian era and the birth of a new archetype; global expansionism and industrialisation. As he entered Cancer and formed the waxing developmental square (quarter cycle) in 1912 the world was at the threshold of the WWI, which saw the outcome of a “new Europe” where Communism became a dominant force and by the late 1920's as Uranus entered Aries for his new 84 year cycle, the rise of the “dictators” with the outcome of WWII as Pluto then moved on into Leo.

The opposition or half way point came in 1971 as he entered Libra. Big business took off with a bang and corporate culture led industrialization toward its' current zenith. It was also during the ‘70s that we were first warned of global warming, and the healing movement led by the 60s “hippies” began to offer alternative ideas for a safer more spiritual humanity. As with all Plutonian phases it often takes quite some time for the larger issues to be revealed and acted upon. So now as Pluto reaches his waning square in his cycle to himself we enter a 16 year period as he commences his journey through Capricorn from January 2008 until 2024. He returns to Aries next in 2066. The waning square offers the “crisis of re-orientation” where the results (Capricorn) of the cycle are ready to bear fruit, at the same time as the cycle begins its descent toward completion. I hope that by seeing the dates involved here you gain a sense of the larger scope involved in the Pluto cycle!

As always I find a little trip back through history most instructive when attempting to define the possible implications of a new phase to come:

Pluto was last in Capricorn from 1762 to 1778; a remarkable period during which a brave new world opened with the hallmark of exploration and innovation. This came after Pluto's journey through the preceding sign of Sagittarius from 1748 to 1762. The great ‘process of upheaval' during this phase saw “enlightenment” in the core philosophies that underpinned society at that time (Sagittarius rules the belief systems that stimulate the collective urge at any time). Thus during the Capricorn phase of the 1760s and 1770s this “enlightenment” thought spread through the governing institutions, with enormous ramifications both then and in the following decades. The War of Independence by the American Colonies was the highlight of this period. Then from 1777 to 1798 as Pluto moved into the revolutionary sign of Aquarius, the French Revolution spelt the end of the plutocratic systems that had run Europe for 600 years, as the democratic principles from ancient Greek times re-asserted their timely humanistic message. As Aquarius rules all things technical and inventive it is also no surprise that the “Industrial Revolution” also accompanied Pluto's transit through Aquarius.

It is interesting to note that it took nearly the whole period from when Pluto first entered Capricorn in 1762, then the buildup in 1765 when the British passed the “Stamp Act” to tax American colonies, until the final few years in Capricorn for the War of Independence to become full blown.

Now let's go back to the previous cycle…briefly…

Pluto was in Capricorn between January 1516 and December 1532. The previous decade of Pluto in Sagittarius gave rise to the “Reformation” and over the next decade and half the political outcomes of this incredibly important shift challenged the Catholic Church system that had been all powerful up until this time. England 's Henry VIII divorce of his Spanish Queen Katherine led to the birth of the Church of England and elsewhere in Europe the Protestant factions grew in ascendancy. Henry's autocratic rulership in this phase is a powerful symbol of Pluto in Capricorn, and set the tone for monarchs all through Europe for the whole of the following cycle.

So what may we expect from his transit through Capricorn for the next 16 years? I will look at a few ideas point by point.

1. The U.S.A. was “born” in the 1770s and now looks set to go through a re-birth in the 2010s. The very nature of the ‘machinery' that has made the U.S.A. the global “superpower” of post WWII times is going to need a radical overhaul in the next decade or two. And I'm starting here because the old saying that when America gets a cold the rest of us start sneezing still holds true. It seems that despite the spin doctors and their version of life in the US , it appears that their basic internal social welfare systems have never been in worse shape. Add to this the nature of collective debt, which sees the average citizen in debt in far greater measure than their pay cheque can cover, and the reality of a global debt recession looms large in the years ahead. And now let's top it off by noting that China is the U.S.A's largest creditor. America has been broke for quite some time now but nobody ever seems to mention this or consider it a particular problem. Then we have the “ North American currency union - a controversial proposal in which the three principal countries of North America , namely Canada , the United States and Mexico , would share a common currency . The hypothetical currency for this union is sometimes referred to as the ‘ amero' . It is a concept similar to the common European Union currency, the euro . Conspiracy theorists contend that the governments of the US , Canada , and Mexico are already taking steps to implement such a currency. ” All very interesting – we shall see!

2. Corporate Governance. As Pluto spends 16 years doing his ‘thing' the deep transformations due will be a gradual affair, and it is obvious that the upheavals ahead will come primarily through the global issues of energy and resources. Just how long the “old school” digs their heels in depends on the generation of leaders in power in the individual countries. As the Pluto in Virgo group come into power they will receive positive aspects from Pluto transiting through Capricorn, so time will bring us more conscious individuals at the helm. It is essential that Companies begin to be held accountable for their environmental impact and by 2012 this will begin to be the case. As to how the rest of the world brings China into the equation remains to be seen. Forgive me if you have heard me say this before, but the single greatest feature to galvanize our collective humanity toward a common goal is the reality we now all share…keeping our head above water! A more conscious corporate culture is long overdue. To this end many people who have developed their knowledge and skills will begin to move into mainstream business affairs. I am one of these people as with my original background in business areas I am now ready to take my 25 years of astrological and metaphysical knowledge toward this end. My new company “Corporate Consciousness” offers training in many ideas and applications. Please contact me at www.universalastrology.com.au for further details.

3. Responsibility for global resources of all kinds. In the 1760s the ruling class had complete control over all resources – in the famous words of Marie Antoinette (which she may or may not have said!) when told the people did not have enough wheat to make bread… “Let them eat cake”. We are once again in an era where the “rich” i.e. global corporations, have complete control over resources. Now since the Jupiter Saturn conjunction in Taurus of May 2000 (beginning of their 20 year cycle) the hallmark of this double decade until 2020 again is …resources. We will witness diminishing supplies of oil and water during this phase and it will be interesting to see what the people do this time… last time they had a revolution and changed the ruling system irrevocably. The entire global corporate/consumer industrial complex runs on oil. And again despite the spin doctors information that we have plenty of time we do not. Oil reserves will diminish over the next decade and it would appear that oil reserves in the Middle East were a major factor in the U.S. “invasion” of Iraq . Energy alternatives must now be allowed to develop regardless of nuclear and coal based vested interests.

4. Real Estate, Land Distribution & Management & Earth Changes. Real Estate This is such a huge subject! For many people purchasing a home is fast becoming impossibility, so unless western governments provide more public housing this situation may not be likely to change. A credit debt fueled recession could also cause current prices to drop dramatically, in much the same way as after the 1989 top in the real estate market. Saturn, Uranus and Neptune were all in Capricorn at that time. The 19 year nodal cycle also returns over this next few years…interesting. Land Distribution European governments are leading the world by already providing cash incentives for farmers and land owners to conserve forests and re-plant their lands, so this is a must globally. As is wealthy nations providing financial support to 3rd world countries so they may halt the destruction of their native habitat. Earth Changes The destructive and regenerative force of Pluto may well be felt in unprecedented measure over the next 16 years. When Pluto in Capricorn is squared first by Saturn in Libra (2009 to 2010) and then by Uranus in Aries (2012 to 2015) the potential for major upheavals in any of the famous hot spots…West Coast US, Japan , Mediterranean ; is most likely.

5. Monarchy and Royalty. As the sign par excellence for royals and important people it will be interesting to see just what transpires in the various royal families…both official and unofficial…around the world. Will Queen Elizabeth II hand over to Charles? With Pluto in Capricorn forming a trine to QEII's Sun, and Charles' Moon in 2008/9 something's got to give… as they say. Charles may turn out to be a very significant figure in global environmental and social affairs over the years ahead. Will the Rockefellers Rothschilds and others of this ilk become more apparent as the power behind the political thrones? Just how will the influence of the rich and famous be felt in the decades to come? Rock and Media Stars along with brand name business tycoons can wield enormous influence for good over old limited world views and the people who will cling desperately to power as the Titanic is sinking…I hope!

6. The “Underground” Capitalist Culture. I've noticed an interesting timeline with the rise of the illicit narcotics and underworld trade in the past few hundred years. The British Empire began to grow enormously in power from the 1820s and the industrial era that Pluto in Aries triggered at that time. Over following decades the Opium Wars in China offered the British a huge earn as they traded tea for opium and the global drug culture was born. As the Americans moved through Italy at the end of WWII certain deals were struck with Mafia families that led to increased activity in organised crime between Europe and the Americas . And then there is the “Silver Train” affair of the Vietnam Era, as narcotics from the Golden Triangle made their way to America creating an escalation of the general use of narcotics throughout the US, and in turn the world. All of these timings accord with significant Pluto phases. Unofficial income from organised crime (drugs, sex and protection) has become so well laundered in recent decades that it is now a significant component of all major global share markets and funds. I am both amused and concerned as I ponder the implications of what possible new levels of skullduggery may arise in the near future. Or could I be a hopeless optimist and imagine that power and greed may begin to be exposed as all sorts of ‘not nice' destructive people topple from their glass towers?

A few more thoughts…

This next Pluto in Capricorn phase heralds both the zenith and the co-incidental breakdown of existing structures as a prelude to the next great technological revolution from 2024. Yes folks if you think technology is already way over your head then you “ain't seen nothing yet”… as they say. The Uranus in Aquarius kids born between 1995 and 2003 carry the exceptional circuitry hardwired into their potential to innovate in ways unimaginable to us now! Have faith my friends as the very solutions we need to fix what the modern industrial machine has damaged lie in this pod of Souls who will rise to the occasion. As to what society may need in the way of revolution, will be the result of the ideals and actions of the new group of leaders about to rise from the ashes of the old forms.

This next 16 years could indeed signal the potential synthesis between Capitalism and Socialism, seemingly opposite in nature but ultimately holding the seeds of a world in which people receive the just dividends of a conscious corporate culture? If the Kings of Commerce begin to take responsibility for humanistic outcomes then this is the promise of this new Age of Aquarius about to unfold. Otherwise my call is that Capitalism will invert or implode on itself. Can the two systems finally begin to converge and lead us forward to a better world where nature is honored as the essence of the wholistic system in which we all abide?

The Moon's North Node & Eclipses passes through Aquarius (South node Leo).

In Mundane Astrology the Moon's Nodes represent the collective emotional (astral) energy of the “people”, and generally rules the masses. The 18.5 year nodal cycle means they transit through each set of polar signs in about 18 months. So for the first time since 1989/1990 they return to Aquarius and Leo. As the sign revolution and change Aquarian humanitarian themes will demand attention, especially as North Node joins Neptune and Chiron in May and June. The first eclipse of the 2008 season on February 7 th falls at 18 degrees Aquarius with the accompanying Lunar Eclipse on February 21 st at 2 degrees Virgo. The second Solar Eclipse 6 months later falls at 10 degrees Leo on August 1 st , with the Lunar in that series at24 degrees Aquarius on August 16 th . Be prepared for unexpected developments in your life that allow you to become more authentic and innovative.

I wish you all peace and inspiration for your lives in the year ahead.

Now read on for individual horoscopes for each sign.

A Look at the 12 Signs in 2008

Aries Get ready to temper your steel and hone your metal Aries as you launch into a year when your dreams will be realised if you knuckle down and organise yourself as never before. With the planet of growth and opportunity Jupiter heading through your career and worldly outcomes area you are right in thinking that your star is on the rise. This is a once in 12 year phase where you can surge ahead into public and/or corporate activity and really get things moving. Meanwhile responsible Saturn (your arch nemesis) crunches through your daily work and health sector auguring a hard work phase that supports your potential, but not without a steady and measured approach. The test here requires confronting any unconscious fears you may hold about really “making it” and enjoying success as an ongoing experience. Aries often sabotages the race just near the finish line by loosing focus or becoming impatient. But not this time…got it!! With powerful Pluto also arriving in this sector for the next 16 years your actions now will mean the difference between long term power outcomes and missing the race completely.

Taurus Taureans love building things because it helps them feel safe… or so they believe. Indeed the bulls of the Zodiac are the preservers and sustainers of our world so with both Jupiter and Saturn in earth signs this year you have all the support you need to do some growing! After the past 2 years of being good responsible kids and really setting up home and family affairs you're now free to redesign your “self” as Saturn prompts your journey toward greater autonomy and individuality…i.e. finding out who you are on a new set of terms. For some this entails confronting old fears of being passionate and creative in your own right, and for others this arrives through your children and their journey. Again the theme is supporting them to become who they are, so lead by example as you unlock your own inner child and let him/her out to play. To help things along expansive Jupiter heads through your higher learning and travel sector so adventures of the mind and world call you to seek a greater sense of meaning and purpose to your life. And to top things off powerful Pluto now also enters Capricorn for the next 16 years heralding a gradual development in your life where this meaning you are to encounter in 2008 sets the tone until 2024.

Gemini The foundations of your world are now in focus as Saturn moves through your home/family sector for the next few years. Saturn inclines your psyche to examine just how safe…or unsafe you are both physically and emotionally, and during this phase you are challenged to build or re-build (depending on your age) the core structures of your life. Some of you may buy/create new homes whilst others have chicks leaving the nest. Whichever way it goes you will need to be a responsible little twin person so yes this is a very grown up phase. Meanwhile career areas require continuing the progressive trends of the past few years with some major shifts due by November. How can you consolidate the innovative ideas that you are bursting with? Expansive Jupiter spends the year in your ‘shared resources' sector so a great time for pooling resources with both business and family partnerships, and also the possibility of legacies or inheritances. It will also give you a much greater understanding of the psychological patterns that operate in your life and can lead to great healing and transformation into your power. Speaking of which Pluto also enters this sector for the next 16 years. So “light weight Gemini” is ready to grow some teeth!

Cancer Your learning curve during 2008 has everything to do with how you use your “mind and mouth”, and if you can be objective about old ways you are limiting yourself then there is much on offer. Examine your everyday mental patterns, attitudes, habits, styles of speaking and whether you listen well to others. Crab people are “feelers” so you may react rather than respond, attack rather than assert…etc…you get the idea! You may have to make some major changes as you realise your communication skills are blocking your potential for “real and effective” relating. This is also a great transit for committing to study or furthering your knowledge, and some may be called to support a sibling during this phase. All I have outlined is supported by Jupiter's year long passage through your relating sector. As he is in your opposite sign of Capricorn both personal and professional partnerships are set to grow and thrive as you learn to allow others to bring you both knowledge and advancement. Marriages under this influence will prosper. Make sure you celebrate your partner's developments rather than resent their “moment in the sun”… remember they are reflecting your own potential! With Pluto the “transformer” also entering your partner zone for the next 16 years your relationships with others holds the key to your own power…or lack of it!

Leo This past few hard working years discovering what you are really made of you are now a more mature and capable Lion so now it is time to re-assess your value systems both psychologically and materially. And as they do indeed reflect each other you may need to examine your emotional security to enhance your financial security! Conversely if you believe in financial struggle and lack then that is what you will create. Even in times of recession it is easy to be prosperous…it's all in the mind after all! And this prosperity comes your way courtesy of fortunate Jupiter surging through your daily work sector throughout the year ahead. Think back 12 years (1996) for the last time Jupiter offered such opportunity in this arena. Here lie the clues, and remember this time your potential now is even greater as you know how and what you want to create...don't you!! It is important to organise, systemize and plan your life, whilst you may also receive offers of a very fortunate nature. The trick is to transcend your egoic drives and trust that who and what you need will arrive…magically! In 4 years time you will reap the rewards of your efforts this year. The Lunar eclipse on August 1 st herald a new 19 year cycle of growth.

Virgo So my friends, now it is your turn for the “facelift” as you re-shape and re-define yourself over the next few years via Saturn in your sign offering his gift of maturity and evolution. As an earth sign his process is more comfortable for you than many, although you will need to remember not to be too hard and exacting with yourself and others in this hard working productive phase. Older Virgins are ready to become authorities in your field and take on more responsibility. Our new PM Kevin Rudd is a Virgo so this fits the bill perfectly! For the younger gang you will awaken to your potential and begin to set goals as you unleash your ambition. By nature you are more comfortable in service or support rather than center stage, but with expansive Jupiter charging through your creativity sector in support of Saturn, you may find it's great to express yourself in more outgoing ways than usual. You'll feel highly motivated and be great at motivating others including your kids who are also in a growthful phase this year. The key here lies in connecting with your passion…usually a low key affair I know, but this year why not let the world see what really matters to you?

Libra This year sees you setting up a brand new home and family phase as Jupiter the planet of expansion and opportunity enters this sector of your life. Emotionally Librans need stability and structure at home to feel safe so make sure you relish this opportunity to give yourself this! Transformational Pluto also arrives here now for the next 16 years, so for some this may mean releasing old family conditions so you can move on. With task master Saturn behind the scenes in your psyche over this next few years, ambition for worldly activity may feel diminished so fret not but rather see this cycle for what it is…a chance to complete projects and release the past as your psyche is gestating the new life to come from July 2010. Take care not to fall prey to depression and gloom here dear ones as sometimes old unacknowledged feelings arise, so don't judge these just feel them and let them go. Remember there is no such thing as failure only lessons learnt. Your psyche is undergoing an overhaul and great strength can be found from your inner resources as you make peace with God in whatever form you perceive “it”. Allow spiritual nourishment to come to you so you may nurture others with the same!

Scorpio With the dynamic duo Jupiter and Pluto set to expand your everyday connection and networking systems this year you can grow your potential by reaching out verbally and intellectually. Pluto is your ruling planet and has just spent the last 16 years transforming your value systems, so with this now in place (it better be!) he spends the next 16 years transforming your everyday beliefs and communication style. Not renowned for being lightweight at the best of times, you will begin to question the ideas you have used to underpin your life until now and must be prepared to throw out any that are limiting your ability to be the powerful being you see yourself as…or not as the case may be! You must learn to evaluate other peoples' input objectively rather than react subjectively, and not resist those who may know more than you do. In due course your potential for transforming others with your knowledge will lead you toward the “safe power” that is your true goal. This then allows the gift of task master Saturn to come in full measure as he brings you into a new phase of ‘group consciousness', and your goals and ideals mature. How can you become more involved in transforming your community or society into a more humane world?

Sagittarius Even though ambition and achievement are not usually features of the happy-go-lucky Sag. story, the news is that with Saturn crunching through your career and outcomes sector for the next few years this is your once in 29 year ‘moment' to reap some rewards! This depends of course on whether you have been a good kid and gradually developed the potential you hold, and as you are the teacher philosophers of the Zodiac this phase brings the chance to ‘spread your word' and be taken seriously. Advancement is the bottom line here so promotions are typical, or you finally publish that book or gain the notoriety you deserve. But none of this comes without some pretty serious intention and application, and with Jupiter and Pluto both residing in your financial zone it may be well worth your while. This also implies a radical overhaul of your value systems over the next several years courtesy of Pluto, and with your ruler Jupiter playing with your dollars there may be both wins and losses as you seek to grow your material world. The point here is that you may need to invest in yourself or projects for later rewards in about 4 years time.

Capricorn Once every 12 years the God of Good Fortune Jupiter comes calling to each sign and this year it's your turn. 2008 marks the beginning of a major new cycle of growth and brings a huge opportunity to launch the ‘new you'…the you who is confident and optimistic in all your endeavors! It's time to get over old patterns of setting yourself up to make things as difficult as possible and playing the old “its hard” script…OK?! You will consistently attract people and situations that benefit you, so trust this and dare to expand in ways that may feel a bit risky to the normally conservative goat…go for it! There is however another factor here that also opens a huge new dimension of your story. Transformational Pluto now enters Capricorn for the next 16 years heralding the potential to carry power and the ability to deeply affect your world. Psychologically you will feel the need to go more deeply into things than ever before, as you uncover dimensions of your nature that may be limiting you so you can transform them. And the final ingredient in the story comes from Saturn in your higher learning and horizon widening sector. Thus both travel and study become features now, but always with the intention of adding to your ‘whole person potential'.

Aquarius Water carriers love Jupiter's urge to adventure and purpose but this year we're talking adventures of an internal kind as he meanders through your 12 th house… the psychological and spiritual zone of your life, so growth now involves connecting with your higher nature where creative vision resides! You'll be happy to escape the madding crowds especially after the last few years of honing and testing yourself in the world and some intense encounters with others, so enjoy occasional solitude and don't fret if external drives are diminished. Deepening your faith and trust in the “greater process” is the gift here, so occult and metaphysical studies may expand your understanding and inspire future goals. Meanwhile Saturn sidles through your house of ‘shared resources', opening some strategic territory for testing and re-appraisal. Aquarians aren't too good at sharing as they are such individual Souls so you are about to find out how good (or not good!) you are at intimacy. Are you safe enough to allow someone into your innermost self? What are your greatest fears…death… loss of your money? A new level of freedom lies at the end of this part of your journey if you are willing to confront your ‘inner dragons'…with love!

Pisces Both personal and professional relationships are a major feature in your astroscape this year with all partnerships needing to be defined, refined and in some cases dismissed! Saturn offers you the chance to set some boundaries that may have eluded you up to now if you are the ‘overly merged' style of fish…the “who am I if I am not under someone's influence?” Defining yourself and becoming clear about what is acceptable and what is not may be your process now. Conversely if you are a “rescuer” fishy person you'll have many opportunities to see this pattern and make decisions not to do this anymore. After all, when we rescue others we deprive them of the chance to be in their own power and they often don't thank us for it anyway! Once you get this lesson there are ample opportunities for growth as Jupiter transits your sector of friends and group associations. This exciting phase brings heaps of vital new people and ideas your way as you evolve another notch, by realising that your highest goals involve interacting with community or society for purposes that go way beyond selfish desires or needs.
