Bio Phyllis Chubb

As a young child I was told that I would be an astrologer. This information did not impress my Baptist grandmother so the matter was dropped. In my mid-20's a friend took to me see another astrologer, David Bennett. His first words to me were "You are going to be an astrologer and after mid 50 you will travel the world, like an ambassador, and the travels will all be related to astrology".

At that point in my life astrology was something done with smoke and mirrors. So when David suggested I attend his classes I went with the intention of learning the tricks. Like a fly caught in fly-paper, I am still trying to learn the tricks. The only difference now is that I know astrology does not involve smoke and mirrors. Astrology is a combination of a science and an art. What it also involves is long hours of study, discipline, hard work and a willingness to continually keep an open mind.

In the 1970's I had the privilege of doing a 3 year, fully time apprenticeship at the side of Elizabeth Tessier, a psychologist and astrologer, who founded the Institute of Astrological Studies in Toronto, Ontario. She and Dr. Jack Griffin MD a psychiatrist and President of the Institute encouraged me to undertake academic studies in psychology. Their rationale was that no matter how good I was at astrology, if I didn't have academics as well no one would take me seriously.

As a result of their encouragement I now hold degrees in Psychology and an Independent Master of Arts which covers aspects of both community psychology and psychiatry.

I practiced and taught western astrology for many years during which time I was blissfully unaware of something called Jyotish. What is Jyotish? It can also be called Indian Astrology. Vedic Astrology usually strives to stick to the teachings that come from the Vedas, the inspired books of knowledge that are the base of Hinduism.

My introduction to this fantastic study came as a result of a book falling off a shelf, as I innocently stood in front of a stack in a bookstore. Yes I caught it in mid-air. The book was entitled, The Astrology of Death and had been written by Richard Houck.

Books that fall into one's hands out of thin air must be purchased. I did just that and my life hasn't been the same since. The more I studied, the more I had to study. Yes, I have passed numerous courses and now teach but my studies are not over nor will they be in this life-time.

I've have had the good fortune of working with some of the best Vedic astrologers in North America, Europe and India. My guru is Sanjay Rath who heads the Sri Jagannath Center (SJC) in Puri, India.

In February of 2001 I had the privilege of being named a Guru (teacher) with SJC. I also teach an on-line Vedic Astrology course through Dirah Academy in the Netherlands (www.Dirah.org) . When time permits I take private students, lecture and do workshops along with maintaining a full time International practice.

The old prediction about travel certainly seems to be coming to pass. I've been travelling all over North America and have been to India twice, all because of astrology.

Besides being a member of SJC I have the Certified Astrological Professional (C.A.P.) designation awarded by I.S.A.R., I am a member of the American Council of Vedic Astrology (ACVA) and a member of the Fraser Valley Astrological Guild.

I live on Vancouver Island in a small community on the coast.
