Essential and Accidental Dignities: This workshop considers the material from the rulership and “Sky” lectures above in considerable depth. It is basically a study of the relationship between planetary placement by sign, degree and house and the intrinsic functioning of that planet. This system shows the difference between the concepts of strength and affinity, and thereby re-examines the recent idea of the twelve letter alphabet. The different kinds of essential dignities – Rulership, Exaltation, Triplicity, Term and Face – are discussed, as well as the detriments and peregrine planets. Both the traditional accidental dignities, such as angularity and retrogradation, and the Hellenistic concepts, like diurnal and nocturnal, are presented and explained.

Sunday March 11, 2012 Workshop: 10AM -5PM

Medical Astrology: We begin by studying wellness: what is the best way for each individual to stay healthy through diet, exercise, and life style. We then consider how transits, profections, progressions, or other dynamic chart movement can impact the body, and whether particular patterns are likely to lead to disease. We then consider what makes a successful surgery chart, and examine some examples of charts for when people have manifested illnesses in order to learn how to diagnose the severity of the problem, ideas for treatment, prognosis, and whether their health care provider is doing a good job.

Lee has a Ph.D. in Botany from Rutgers University. Lee was the recipient of the 1995 Marc Edmund Jones Award , and the recipient of the 2008 Regulus Award for Education. Along with Esoteric Technologies, Lee has created two software report writer programs written specifically for the classical astrologer: Solar Writer/Medicus , for medical questions and decumbitures; and Solar Writer/Classical , for natal delineation in the matter-of-fact style of the Renaissance astrologer. She has developed the innovative add-on to Cosmic Pattern’s Sirius: Who Wins, which captures the rules of Bonatti for warfare for use in researching the outcome of sporting events. Dr. Lehman is a Professor and Vice President for Academic Affairs at Kepler College, where she has been on the faculty since it opened in 2000. Interrogatory Method of Natal Chart Analysis

In modern astrology it is often stated that one must look at the chart as a whole. This is appropriate for obtaining a general overview of a chart.  However, when examining the chart for specific areas of life, most systems become unstructured and imprecise.  Ptolemy’s method offers a highly structured approach in helping us make specific statements about a natal chart. Not only do these procedures tell the astrologer what to look at; more importantly, they also tell the astrologer what NOT to look at. This lecture will include a general introduction to this method, strategies on which to focus and guidance on how to gather vital information to assist in the final intuitive synthesis.  The overall result is a more reliable assessment of the natal chart. Through most of the 20th century most astrologers tended to stress the separation of Astrology and Magic. Yet this has not always been the case. In the medieval and early modern period there was a kind of Astrology that was strongly linked to Magic and there was also an Astrology that was in terms of its day considered “scientific.” This lecture will discuss the two kinds of astrology from an historical point of view, their differences and similarities, and what portions of each may be applicable to 21st century uses. Ancient Philosophy and Spirituality and their Impact on Astrology

This workshop will deal with the interaction of astrological ideas and ancient philosophy and show how it affected them, drew upon them, and became in fact completely integrated with them in a grand synthesis, much of which extended into the Middle Ages. But as a result of the later stages of this synthesis Astrology became a “science” in the medieval sense of the world and in doing so lost something of its mystical and spiritual foundation; it split in two, into “scientific” and “magical” branches. In the latter was preserved the original spiritual nature of astrology which can be used to build a new philosophy of astrology so that once again astrology can be, as ancient astrology was, thoroughly involved with, and rooted in, the philosophy and religion of its day.

Anne Massey will be presenting a talk on Venus and Mars—the tango between the two planets that represent our desires. Are your Venus needs being met? Are you in charge of your Mars? These two have an intricate cyclical dance and somewhere in that cycle we opted to enter life. This talk will be somewhat interactive, so you might want to check if you were born at night or during the day and what signs your Venus and Mars occupy. Anne’s talks tend to be jam-packed with information so a notepad and a pen might come in handy.

Denise Grams will be presenting a talk and her long awaited workshop on Family Dynamics.  Generational family dynamics can be fascinating, revealing and another way to understand not only where we came from by why we have certain traits and characteristics.The content of the workshop will be based on three families and hopefully we can access at least four generations for each family. At the Guild meeting in September 2009 Denise presented an astrological delineation of the dynamics of a family based on four generations. There were great-grandparents, a parent, a child and his wife and their two children. Outlining the dynamics for the particular family in question, Denise considered Soul cconnections (based on Pluto), mind connections (based on Mercury), identity and security connections (based on the Sun and Moon), and co-related psychological wounding (based on Psyche.) Depending on any given family, the connections could be made up of any of the planets and asteroids. After the presentation the group indicated that they wanted more by way of a workshop. Denise is now pleased to present her workshop on this topic beginning with a lecture on Thursday evening, June 9th, 7:30 – 9:30 pm, and all day Saturday, June 11th, 10:30 am – 5:00 pm. The content of the workshop will be based on three families and hopefully we can access at least four generations for each family.

Electional Astrology holds particular intrigue and fascination for Claire Morriss, and naturally she is not alone. We all want to know the good, better and best times for important events in our lives. Her presentation will include an overview of Electional Astrology, rules for setting up a chart and examples of charts for various situations. 

As a teenager, Claire Morriss developed an interest in astrology.  Since then, she read numerous books on the topic to expand her knowledge.  When the opportunity to enroll in an astrology course came along, she seized it with gusto.  December 1979 marked a new chapter in her life when she emigrated from her native South Africa.  Claire applies what she has learned in working as an educator with the many students she has taught over a period of twenty years in Canada and Australia. 

 Claire is the vice president of the Fraser Valley Astrological Guild and a student of Anne Massey.  She has recently completed the Level II CAAE exam.  Electional Astrology (among other branches of astrology) holds particular intrigue and fascination for her, as she applies it in her personal life, working under Anne’s guidance.  Claire appreciates the ongoing learning as she practises setting up charts for elections.  Her presentation will include an overview of Electional Astrology, rules for setting up a chart and examples of charts for various situations.

The outer planets spend a long time transiting any one sign. Uranus spends about 7 years in a sign, Neptune 14 years, and Pluto – spends an average of 21 years in a sign. As many people share the same sign placement of the outer planets at birth, they can be descriptive of and common to a whole group of people. They are often associated with themes and experiences which are universal. For these reasons, the outer planets are often termed collective, transpersonal and generational.

We’re getting together for a round table discussion regarding the significance of Uranus transiting Aries on March 10th. Janice Brown, Denise Grams and Charlotte Greenwood each present an introduction to get the conversation started. Bring your charts, notes, and any important points you’d like to share. This promises to be an engaging evening.

During the past 7 years, Uranus has transited the dream of Pisces. On March 11th, Uranus enters Aries, birthing a new cycle. If you missed Rose Marcus’ Annual Forecast, she called this “a once in a lifetime” transit. Aries is cardinal fire; dynamic, active, and initiating, interested in motion from a stand still. Aries wants to move outward with purpose, towards a goal, or in a particular direction. This is the energy of spring, of new growth. It is about risk-taking and adventure, boldness and courage. It is the pioneering drive stepping into the unknown and acting without fear. Uranus is the first outer planet beyond Saturn, which is associated with structure, boundaries, rules and responsibility. By contrast, Uranus represents the urge to be independent and break free, to be radically different. It is symbolic of rebellion and the overthrowing of old order, much like the protests we’ve recently seen in Tunisia and Egypt. Revolutionary Uranus is known as “The Great Awakener.” It is also considered the higher octave of Mercury, and associated with innovation, creative genius, the brilliant scientific discoveries and enlightenment that bring rapid change.
