Power, Authority and the Ghatika Lagna

Who hasn't fantasized about having power and authority? Wouldn't it be great to have the world, well part of it anyway, go around to our liking? A special point in birth charts will tell the likelihood of a person's personal power. This special point is called the Ghatika Lagna.

How to find this point will be discussed below.

GHATIKA LAGNA (GL)

One "Ghatika" represents a period of time equal to 24 minutes, and thus there are 2 and ½ Ghatikas in a period of 1 hour, and thus 5 Ghatikas in the normal rising period of a sign, i.e. 2 hours.

The Ghatika lagna is the position of the Sun at Sunrise. It moves at a rate of one sign every 24 minutes, or in other words, at 1 degree 15 minutes per minute or 30 degrees every 24 minutes. Thus the following formula may be used to calculate the Ghatika lagna using the previous chart information:

1. Find the time of sunrise and the Sun's longitude at sunrise.
2. Find the difference between the birth time, or specific event and the sunrise time found in #1 above. Convert the difference into minutes.
3. Multiply the number found, by 1.25.
4. Add the sun's longitude at sunrise, in degrees, to the number that results. Expunge multiples of 360 degrees, and reduce the number to the range of 0 - 360 degrees. The final result in degrees and minutes, is the Ghatika lagna, or GL.

Finding the GL for the data given above.

Birth time 19:23 - local sunrise of 6:37 = 12 hours 46 minutes.
12 hours X 60 (to convert into minutes) = 720 minutes + 46 minutes = 766 minutes
766 minutes X 1.25 = 957.30 degrees
The Sun's longitude at sunrise is 294:17 degrees. Adding the 957:30 degrees we get 1251:47 degrees.
Subtracting multiples of 360, we get 171:47 degrees. So the GL is at 21Ò47 Virgo.

Since the GL represents a rising time that is 5 times faster than the normal rising sign of 2 hours, matters related to the 5th house can be interpreted from it.

Although matters pertaining to children, educational degrees, and creativity, etc. are learned from the 5th house, the specific attribute of GL is the acquisition of power or authority.

When a dasa period activates the GL, a person may rise in influence or power. The degree of the elevation will be related to the strength, position and aspects made to the GL. The GL is therefore very important in the charts of all types of leaders or those people whose professions require them to be in charge of others.

Practice finding this special point in your chart and the charts of your friends and family. See what can be told from these positions. In the next issue some factors that can be used in conjunction with both the Hora Lagna which was discussed earlier, and the Ghatika Lagna will be offered.
