A Special Lagna

Having money, or knowing if we have money in our charts is near the hearts of us all. One way to see when money will come our way is to look that where the Hora Lagna (HL) is situated in our charts.

How to find the HL will be the topic for discussion here.

We know that the ascendant is the time interval between the exact degree of the zodiac of the Sun, at local sunrise, and the time of birth. Given that there are 12 signs in the zodiac, over the course of each day (24 hours) one sign appears to arise approximately every two hours. The starting point for determining this time interval for all the special lagnas is the same, i.e. the Sun's zodiacal position at the time of sunrise. However, the time lapsing between sunrise and the time of birth for HL is slightly different as will be seen below.

HORA LAGNA (HL)

The Hora lagna marks the position of the Sun at the time of local sunrise. It moves at a rate of one sign per hour (Hora), or in other words at ½ a degree per minute (i.e. 30 degrees or one sign per hour). In order to calculate the Hora lagna, the following steps may be used:

1. Find the time of sunrise and the Sun 's longitude at sunrise.
2. Find the difference between the birth time, or a specific event time, and the sunrise time found in # 1 above. Convert hours and minutes into minutes.
3. Divide the number by 2 or multiply it by .5, which is the same thing. The result is the advancement of the Hora lagna since Sunrise, in degrees.
4. Add the Sun's longitude at sunrise, in degrees, to the above number. Expunge multiples of 360 degrees, and reduce the number to the range of 0 - 360 degrees. The result in the degrees and minutes, will be the Hora lagna.

Example:

Someone was born at 7:23 PM, with the local sunrise at 6:37 AM on the day of birth. At 6:37 AM, the Sun was at 24Ò17 of Capricorn. Determine the Hora lagna as follows:

Birth time 19:23 - local sunrise of 6:37 = 12 hours 46 minutes.
12 hours X 60 (to convert into minutes) = 720 minutes + 46 minutes = 766 minutes
Divide 766 minutes by 2 = 383 degrees.
Add this sum to the Sun's longitude at sunrise, which is 294.17 degrees
383 + 294.17 = 677:17 degrees.
Now expunge 360 degrees. 677:17 - 360 = 317:17 which is 17Ò17' Aquarius.

The Hora lagna (HL) relates to the second house and money matters. The reason for this is because HL, represents a period of time which rises twice as fast as the normal rising time for signs, therefore the number two, and matters related to the 2nd house of the astrological chart are seen from it.

The dasa periods of rasis or planets associated or aspected by the HL, will greatly influence the person's prosperity and financial strength. Likewise the house position of the HL, and its lord, is most important in the over-all assessment of the financial potential shown in the chart. For example, if the HL is in the 12th house, and has malefic planets aspecting or influencing it financial challenge will be experience when the dasa periods associated with the HL come into operation.

Similarly, house placement is important. The placement of the HL if in good houses, and aspected by trinal lords, brings about a Dhana yoga, particularly during dasa periods associated with the HL.

Practice with your chart, or those of your friends and family members. In the issues to come other factors related to the examination of the HL will be discussed.
