Horary Astrology

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Horary astrology answers specific questions from a chart cast for the date, time and place the question was received.

What else does the chart say?

Some sources say that the horary chart answers ONLY the question that was asked. I have found this NOT to be true hundreds of times. However, the horary astrologer should always focus on just the question that was asked before looking around to find other goodies in the chart. Certain events, even some unrelated to the question, most definitely will be evident in many cases. I must sound a warning, though. Don't overdo it. The horary chart is not a natal chart. This month I am sending in an example where the chart signaled me about another situation in the client's life that was really the answer to her question.

The lease on this client's apartment was coming up for renewal. There was a possibility of being transferred to another location for her job. So she wanted to know whether to sign the lease for another year. The alternative was to pay month-to-month, which would incur an extra $50 in rent each time.

Woman asks: Should I sign the lease?

Moon's applying aspects: Contra-parallel Jupiter, square Mercury, parallel Mars - Open Chart (use the browser's expand image for a crystal clear view- the pillow looking thing)

The first thing to notice is the First House. All the rulers of that house rule the person asking the question. Here we have several rulers and all of them are her significators. Pisces has two rulers, Jupiter and Neptune. The planets in the First House are also significators, so we add Mars and the Moon to the list. Aries is intercepted and its ruler is Mars, which we have already used as a significator.

We might ask how on earth the astrologer is supposed to cope with multiple significators. Every planet has its own piece of the story to tell. Trust the chart and just go one step at a time. Usually it is clear what the dominant aspects are. See how it is handled in this case.

The horary astrologer must always identify the house that rules the question as the next step. Just for the sake of argument, let's say that we are not sure which house to use. There could be more than one choice. The Third House rules contracts, papers and documents, or the Fourth House because it rules the place where she lives or what about the Seventh House and its connection to legal matters and contractual agreements. This is where horary astrology shows its magic. You will notice that Mercury rules all three houses. Mercury itself is connected to contracts and documents as well.

Mercury is not well placed in Sagittarius; that is a sign of its detriment. It applies to a sextile to Uranus in the Twelfth House. That is not such a great sextile. Both planets are in late degrees signaling something about this situation is "too late." The Moon's only major aspect is an applying square to Mercury. Forget about all those other significators as far as judging this chart goes. The answer right there is, "No, do not sign the year lease."

But just in case we are curious about those other little pieces of the story, let's see if we can figure out what Mars has to tell us. (Mars also is squaring Mercury.) There is a rule in horary astrology that the planet the Moon was last over tells something about an event in the past that somehow leads to the question. The Moon was last over Mars. Mars rules the intercepted sign. Intercepted signs rule information that is hidden or behind the scenes, something that is contributing to a situation but may not be apparent. Planets in Pisces are usually considered to be in the sign of misfortune. (There are always exceptions.) The Eighth House is co-ruled by Mars and is a house where there may be secrets. Mars, or any planet in an angular house, can rule secrets that come out into the open and are revealed.

If you are a regular reader of my horary columns, you may notice that something jumps out at you that is quite catastrophic. The Moon's South Node is there and it is not good, but that is not it. Pluto, the other ruler of Scorpio, is in the same degree as the nodes. Any planet in the nodal degree, no matter in what sign, is an indication of a catastrophe however great or small. Pluto is semi-sextile and quincunx the nodal axis. That is the worst when the quincunx gets in on the act. Even more disastrous is that 19 degrees Scorpio is the position of the extremely malefic fixed star, Serpentis.

The quincunx from Pluto goes to the North Node in the Second House so I concluded that a financial catastrophe is looming large. The Eighth House rules indebtedness and Pluto is in a house and sign of legal action. Jupiter that rules the Ninth and Tenth Houses brings in activity through the Courts. Bankruptcy is a strong possibility. Neptune, another significator, is in the house of misfortune (Twelfth) and the focal leg of a yod with Saturn and Jupiter. One last indicator is Venus opposing the Part of Fortune. Now we can begin to see how the other significators have their own stories to tell!

When I told this client that she was facing possible bankruptcy I wasn't quite prepared for her reaction. I did not expect it to be exactly good news of course, but she was absolutely struck dumb and for a couple of days was horribly upset and out of control. Apparently she had buried her head in the sand about the huge debt she was carrying telling herself that "things would turn out alright." This was a reality shock. When she finally collected her wits she called to say, "I am technically bankrupt right now. I just haven't filed papers. I have to move because I can't afford this apartment. I am going to move in with my sister immediately. I also have to look for a job that pays more money. My company cut my services and I am working only half time."

Despite the fact that this client was terribly distraught when she first was confronted with the message in the chart, she later told me that this was just the wake up call she needed to face the reality of her situation, make some hard decisions and initiate some action to solve her problems.
