Horary astrology answers specific questions from a chart cast for the date, time and place the question was received.
A woman client discovered some writings in her daughter's room suggesting that there had been improper advances from the father, my client's husband. The alleged incidents took place twice according to the daughter, then 16 years old. The daughter's memory was not very specific saying only that the first incident was in the 4th, 5th or 6th grade and the second was in the 7th, 8th or 9th grade.
The husband flatly denied that any such incidents occurred. The family discussed it openly. The father was so uncomfortable with the daughter in the house making these allegations that the girl was staying with a foster family at the time. The mother leaned toward believing the husband. The mother reported that she and her daughter had a long stormy history and wondered if the daughter way lying to get back at her.
Considering the serious nature of the situation, I began to have visions of myself dashing around the chart looking at the different houses for the father, the mother, the daughter, the sexual relationship and so on. So I decided to phrase the question, "Is the story true?" That narrowed it to just one house, the third.

Sometimes a question comes along that you think will really give you fits. Yet if you are creative in the way the question is asked, the answer just pops out. That is the case here. Go to the Third House of rumors (facts, information, etc.), There is Neptune retrograde hiding just behind the cusp. No doubt about it. The story is a lie. The rumor is not true.
If you want some confirmation you need look no further than the Moon in Pisces in the Fifth House. The Fifth House rules the daughter. Pisces is a sign that can be confused, deceptive or lying when afflicted. Don't mix it up with natal charts. I would hate to have my Piscean friends read that.
Neptune rules Pisces and that takes us back to the Third House again. The Moon is in Pisces. The Moon also opposes Mercury, the natural ruler of the Third House and shows that the facts, or story, are false.
I can remember thinking at the time that I did not want to call my client and just announce, "Your daughter is lying." The fact that there was confirming evidence astrologically would not mean anything to my client. So I set about looking for something about the daughter and this situation that would lay all doubts to rest.
Jupiter rules the Third House. It is in the Eighth House that rules over sexual matters. It is simply showing that the story was about sexual misconduct. It also co-rules Pisces, the sign the Moon is in that rules the daughter. Jupiter is conjunct the fixed star, Alcyone, one of the Weeping Sisters in the Pleaides. Alcyone in Greek mythology threw herself into the sea and turned into a Kingfisher out of grief over her husband's death. Is this a clue that the daughter may want to replace the mother and claim the father as her husband? Jupiter is in a late degree and makes no applying aspects, which further reinforces that the story is a fabrication.
There is another fixed star of interest. Now we are getting an interesting little scenario going here. Pluto, a planet that rules over sexual matters, is conjunct Vindemiatrix. By the way, I use only conjunctions to fixed stars. The jury is still out on oppositions, but some astrologers do consider oppositions a viable aspect for fixed stars. I once insisted on accepting no orb; planets had to be in the exact degree of the star. I have since learned that you may allow a one-degree orb and I have seen that work.
Now back to Vindemiatrix. I really love showing off by bandying about that name Vindemiatrix (Vinn-duh-MIE-uh-tricks). Much more useful, however, is its nickname, The Star of Widowhood. It often must be interpreted symbolically and not literally as the case here. The daughter's Moon is quincunx (150 degrees) Pluto in the Twelfth House, but that is the girl's Eighth House of sexuality. Count eight houses from the Fifth and see where you end up. Count the Fifth House as "one" and so on around the wheel.
So what do we make of all of this? I must say that we could get pretty Freudian if we wanted to. What with the Moon's square to Neptune, from the sign Pisces, to the Alcyone myth, to the opposition to Mercury to the Star of Widowhood conjunct Mother's ascendant I think we have a major delusional fantasy going on. Kill off Mom and take Dad for yourself.
The Moon quincunx Pluto I have interpreted as the abandoned child aspect. She literally was abandoned by her father who sent her to a foster home. The Moon in the picture probably means she had felt abandoned by her mother most of her life. She had a troubled relationship with the mother, but had a good relationship with her father over the years. Mars rules the Seventh House of my client's husband. Mars is his ruler. The trine to Jupiter says he is telling the truth. Armed with this, I called my client and told her about the real story and recommended that the daughter receive professional help.
When I told the woman, the thing that really cinched it was the fact that the daughter was in a fantasy world. She said that she was obsessed with movie stars, particularly Marilyn Monroe, the sex goddess. I had hoped that I could nail something that would be so right on that everyone could be convinced without any lingering suspicions. That is exactly what happened.
When confronted, the daughter recanted and agreed to see a professional therapist. The husband felt comfortable enough in light of the truth that the daughter moved back into the house after several sessions with the therapist. One last comment: I used this in a class once and there is a side to this chart that mixes in the girl's fantasy that well could have confirmed my fears of exactly what could happen if the question was different. Students started down that road. When there is delusion, what the person imagines will be an aspect of the chart and it is sometimes very difficult to separate the real from the fantasy. So just go to the Third House and get the facts. That is what it is for.
There has been a tendency in the past for astrologers who are not into horary astrology to view the craft as a dusty rule-ridden old woman from the time of William Lilly. I think that in actual practice horary astrology is of tremendous benefit to people in contemporary times and that the horary astrologer certainly has plenty of latitude to express the symbolism of the stars in highly creative ways.
