Horary Astrology
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Horary astrology answers specific questions from a chart cast for the date, time and place the question was received.
A Question of Timing
Question: Should I visit my Dad within the next seven days?
My client Deborah alerted me several months ago that her father was diagnosed with cancer. She lives in Massachusetts and her father lives in Texas. The father was losing his battle with the disease and Deborah was very stressed about when she should visit him. Three times the father appeared to be at death's door only to rally around and do better for a time. Deborah has two small children and many responsibilities making it somewhat of a hardship to travel back and forth.
She called me in tears and was terribly upset because her father again was doing very badly. If this truly were the end, she wanted to go. However, if he were to rally around again she would not go. That led up to asking the horary question. We decided to set the time frame within one week. I am choosing this chart to demonstrate the point that the horary chart knows only what it is asked. In this case, if that point is not born in mind the astrologer might be led to the wrong conclusion.
The houses I am interested in for this question are the Ninth House of long distance travel, the Eighth House of death in your circle and the Fourth House for her father. Libra is rising which makes Venus her significator. Venus also rules the Eighth House, which should immediately alert you to the possibility of death. Venus is also occupying the Eighth House and is in a square aspect to the Part of Death in the father's house, the fourth. View horary chart in a new window.
Mercury retrograde rules the Ninth House of her trip to Texas and is placed in the Eighth House, which I read as a trip because of a death. The Part of Fortune in the Eighth House is not a good placement for it and may be regarded as the Part of Misfortune in this case. Another negative indicator is the Node in 29 degrees of Taurus. That is the degree of the Pleiades, known as the "weeping sisters" in horary. It means there is something to cry about. The Moon is applying to a trine to Mercury indicating the trip. You will notice that the Moon is in forward motion and Mercury is in retrograde motion. They are moving towards each other. That is called mutual application and is a powerful aspect in horary. Venus and Mercury are applying to a conjunction also.
So far it seems fairly straight forward that the father's death will occur. But we have a question of timing. Will the death occur in the next seven days requiring her to leave almost immediately or will it be delayed yet again? Mercury rules the Ninth House of the trip and is retrograde. Retrograde planets indicate delays. Another horary rule says that the first three degrees of a sign are "too early for now" degrees. Two degrees of a sign is on the cusps of both the Ninth House and the Eighth House. Also, the Part of Death is in one degree of Aquarius. Are these indicators saying that the trip should be delayed?
I reminded you that the horary chart knows only the precise question that is asked. That means that this chart knows ONLY what can happen within a seven-day period. Consequently, the delay can only mean that he will pass away toward the end of the week rather than the first part of the week. This question was asked on May 18, 2003, a Sunday. (Horary astrologers don't get Sundays off!) I told her that she should plan to see her father no later than Friday. She left on Tuesday, had four days with her father and he died on Friday with her at his bedside.
If I had not taken into consideration that this chart was only for seven days and read the early degrees and the delays to mean not to go at all at that time, she would have missed a very precious experience with her father.
