Horary Astrology
QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Horary astrology answers specific questions from a chart cast for the date, time and place the question was received.
You don't always know why the chart says yes!
This month's column is a reminder to heed what the chart says, not what the client wants it to say or what the astrologer thinks it should say. I have a collection of charts in my files that only in retrospect did it become apparent why the answer was yes or no. The featured chart this month is certainly a case in point.
Woman asks: Should I get further treatment from the original dentist?
Here is the story. This client kept me on the phone for an hour describing a most unfortunate situation that developed when she had tooth implants and a crown. I will mercifully spare you the details. The problem she wanted to ask about concerned the dentist who originally did the crown. To say she was most unhappy with him is an understatement. The crowned molar was causing a great deal of discomfort and she thought it was too big. She was very worried about returning to him for treatment but he had offered to do it for free. The dental work had already cost her well over $3000, so she hesitated to go to another dentist who would of course charge an additional fee. She was so distraught and undecided she chose to turn to horary astrology.
The first step in reading any horary chart is to identify the rulers that relate only to the matter at hand. The First House always rules the querent (the one asking the question no matter who it is). In this case we have Capricorn rising telling us immediately that we are getting a really valid chart. Why? That is because Capricorn rules teeth and dentists. That makes Saturn the planet that will function as her significator here. It is in the Sixth House of health questions. Saturn is in its detriment in Cancer indicating that she is in a disadvantaged position and that something really is wrong. The Sixth House also rules dentists so we have a double whammy here telling us that the horary chart is really speaking to us about this question.
Maybe you are wondering why I am making such a point about how well the chart fits the question. That actually warrants consideration in every chart. The sharp-eyed and focused horary astrologer always pays close attention to the "grain of the chart", as the late great Marc Edmund Jones described it. The chart needs to speak to you in a way that you know it is really seriously communicating about the question asked. When doesn't it? I recently read a chart for a client and the thing was just a pile of mush. It led from nowhere to nowhere. As it turned out, the client had really asked the wrong question. I usually try to catch that problem, but this one got away from me. You know the chart is speaking to you when you look at it and then go running around the room yelling, "That fits. That is amazing!"
Looking at the chart again, we will use Mercury as the dentist's significator. Does it get any better than this, Mercury conjunct Saturn in the Sixth House? Some books say that if the faster moving planet is separating from the significator that this represents only a past event. I consider that a conjunction, a yes answer and a red light to the future. That is how you learn; see how it works in actual practice.
Well, not so fast, there are some worrisome indicators here. I certainly do not like retrograde malefics in the First House. Her co-ruler, the Moon, will oppose that Neptune there. Should I change my mind? Neptune is heading for the Part of Fortune and that is an alleviating factor. The Moon does move on and conjoin with Jupiter and then end with a sextile to Venus. My revered teacher, Ivy Golstein-Jacobson, used to tell me that an angular Jupiter will offset a lot of ills. I told the client to indeed return to the original dentist but to have realistic expectations. Neptune opposing Jupiter is sometimes an aspect of grandiose expectations. I can tell you that the client met this answer with a great deal of skepticism.
Here is a chart where I used the solstice points to confirm the answer and they were quite amazing. (I apologize for not taking the time to explain solstice points. Look in your horary book.) Mercury's solstice point is 25 degrees Gemini and conjoins Venus. Venus's s.p. is four degrees Cancer and conjoins Mercury. Saturn's s.p. is 27 degrees Gemini and that puts it with Venus. (I am not calculating the solstice points to exact minutes here.) That triple line-up I looked at as sort of a multiple mutual reception. It really ties all of the significators together and nailed down my answer. There are two traditional mutual receptions in the chart. The Moon is in mutual reception with the Sun, a point for the positive column. Neptune is in mutual reception with Uranus. However, the latter two are retrograde. The mutual reception shows a way out of the problem, but if the planets are retrograde they may hesitate to take any action.
The chart was judged to say yes even though there were some weird indicators. The logical assumption would be that the dentist would repair the bridge and even if it were not exactly right it would be okay. Wrong! The client called to tell me that she did return to the dentist and that he decided he did not want to deal with her any more and returned all of her money! She loves me.
