Horary Letters

May I ask Diana a few simple questions regarding techniques that she mentioned in the horary "The Client who found out more than he wanted to
know"
that have been puzzling me?

1. How do planets that are in one degree or low degrees give answers that are "too early for now"? What is the source for this?

2. What exactly is the "Via Combust Way" and how and why is it unfortunate? Are all planets and angles unfortunate in this Via Combust Way?

3. What is refranation?

4. How does the Moon at 16.36 Leo conjunct Venus at 01.39 Cancer? How does
Venus changing sign effect this conjunction? How do we recognise conjunctions between planets?

5. Please explain void of course and why the sun is in this condition. Contact Maurice via e-mail.

I look forward to Diana's replies.

Regards.

Maurice McCann.

From Diana Stone: How exciting that someone read my column and is asking questions. I love corresponding with other horary astrologers. When I get caught up here I
will be glad to address all of his questions.

One thing I will say to people is that I don't want to write the whole book of horary rules in each column. People who like horary will need to follow the column over time. Each time I will choose a rule or two to elaborate on. Horary is rule bound and it can get a little tedious if too much is thrown at them at once.

Maybe now and then I should devote a column to explaining in detail a couple of the rules. But it is always more interesting to relate to a chart and more instructional, I think.

Hi Maurice,

1. Planets in the first three degrees of a sign are said to be "too early for now." If the ascendant or significators are so placed, there is always something premature about the matter, in early stages or underdeveloped. This has worked well in many different charts. In questions about illness, early degrees indicate that the problem is in the early stages. Mrs Jacobson also taught about the last three degrees of a sign as "too late degrees." Mrs Jacobson was a long time student of the William Lilly astrological writings. Low degrees may also have other meanings as well

2. The Via Combust Way is a section of the zodiac between 15 degrees Libra and 15 degrees Scorpio. It is a said to be unfortunate. Barbara Watters said to ignore the Via Combusta is a mistake and I agree. The Moon there is especially unfortunate, disruptive and unpredictable. It acts like a Mars-Uranus conjunction. When it spans the ascendant the querent is upset and at a disadvantage, and also if the significators are there. I mark the Via Combust Way in every chart. It will indicate where the querent's most upset or most at a disadvantge. Never read a chart with the Moon there without taking it very much into consideration.

3. Refranation means that a faster moving planet cannot complete its aspect to another planet because the second planet changes signs before the first planet reaches it. This is very important to notice when the moon cannot complete its last aspect or "refrains" from perfecting the aspect.

4. The Moon cannot aspect Venus at 1.39 Cancer. I was very puzzled by this when I looked at the chart I had showing Venus at 29 Aquarius. I had a senior moment there. When I wrote the column I chose a group of charts. I chose one and wrote the column. After I sent the column off, I reread it looking at ANOTHER chart the WRONG chart. I e-mailed Anne and added the paragraph about refranation. I wouldn't have figured this out except when I went to write this letter, the other chart was still along with the one published. You were sharp-eyed there, Maurice. Maybe you should be my editor. If you want to see the refranation, the other chart data is March 26, 2003, 8:44 PM PST, in Felida (Vancouver), WA.

5. When a planet is void-of-course it makes no applying aspects from the sign it is in. This is mostly used to refer to when the Moon is void-of-course. Some astrologers interpret a void-of-course Moon chart to mean that nothing will happen in the matter. That is often the case, but I have plenty of charts to prove otherwise. The entire chart must be examined taking the void moon into consideration. Sometimes it is comforting to know nothing will happen. I recently lost my wedding ring. I asked a horary question and the Moon was void-of-course. I just let nature take its course and found it three weeks later. I needed to do nothing. When a planet or significator is in late degrees and makes no applying aspects I consider it void-of-course and inactive, or not describing any action in the matter. Contact Diana via e-mail.

I am certain we will see more on these topics. Will append those comments here for your education. Thank you, Maurice and Diana.
