Venus Story 2010
Venus moved into Scorpio September 8, and will move into the next Zodiacal sign of Sagittarius January 7, 2011. There is more to Venus’ travels this Season and next. Venus will return back to Libra November 7 for three weeks. Three weeks is the norm Venus visits a zodiacal sign. The delightful anomaly is when Venus spends extra time in a sign—since 1962 this particular cycle has been exclusively in Scorpio. This year, Venus returns to Libra by a little over two degrees, and in eight years by almost five degrees and naturally somewhat longer than three weeks. Venus weaves her magic with the precision of a metronome.
Venus favours Libra and Scorpio for longer than usual. Venus moved into Scorpio September 8 and stays in this sign until November 7, and comes back for an encore beginning November 29 until January 7, 2011. We had even more of Venus in Scorpio back in 2002—Venus was in Scorpio exclusively September 7, 2002 to January 7, 2003. This year Scorpios need to share with Libra (and that will go on for another five decades or so, with the Libran share of Venus’ company growing). Venus was in Libra from August 6 to September 6, and she is coming back for an encore of another three weeks in November; refer to Venus’ travel schedule for details. Read more »
Predictions and Progressions
My September workshop at the Fraser Valley Guild explored the topic of Secondary Progressions and Predictions. We discussed the Day-for-a-year symbolism and its ancient roots as a symbolic time system. (Other progressions less widely used by astrologers include tertiary – day for a lunar month, and minor – one lunar month for a year.)
A key feature of working with secondary progressions is the way planets actual movement in relation to each is maintained. That is, in the sky, the Moon moves faster than the Sun and this relationship is maintained in Secondary Progressions (but isn’t in Solar Arc directions). Read more »
November 11 talk
On Remembrance Day Mac McLaughlin a Vancouver-based astrologer with 40 years of experience will be sharing his insights into the Marcia Moore Story. Marcia came from a well to do New England family and was heir to the Sheraton Biltmore hotel chain. She was a great Astrologer and had co-authored several books with her first husband, Mark Douglas. The very popular book, “Yoga, Youth and Reincarnation” by Jess Stern is about Marcia and her yoga expertise. In 1976 Mac sponsored Marcia and arranged talks in Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria, Courtney and Texada Island. She met her future husband, Doctor Howard Sunny Altunian while on tour. They married shortly after and within a year she had gone missing. Mac’s talk will be about the Astrology surrounding the story. He has their charts and the charts for the day of her disappearance, and of course, a surprise announcement regarding the story. With any time left Mac will share his thoughts regarding the Royal family and the fate that is heading their way in the near future. Read more »
Mercury Direct Today
Mercury stations direct today at 5°Virgo 22′. The past three weeks have been challenging to many of us as Mercury Rx has prompted us to pay attention to what we are doing and why we continue to do so. I have found the past few weeks very distracting as there has been so many things I felt I need to handle. We are looking at adding regular features to our blog, I have been busily soliciting members to begin a periodic ‘blog-column’ on our site using a topic they are interested in. I hope that this would encourage members to comment on the topics and threads and maybe even generate more traffic at our Facebook page. This prompted my to decide to begin my little thread with the Mercury station. Read more »
New look and new content
We are in the process of updating the look of our website and adding regular features by our members. Kelly Surtees presented two talks and a workshop on progressions, aspects and light in September. She is a wonderful, organized and insightful presenter, we had so much fun. Kelly will begin a follow up conversation on her topic. You can post comments, questions, observations etc. to this thread. Also did you know that we have a Facebook page, it has been up there since 2007 and maybe it is time we utilize it.
A Concise History of Astrology
by Kelly Surtees
What Is Astrology?
Astrology is an ancient body of knowledge originally developed as a timing system. Shepherds in the Near East plotted the daily motion of the Sun and Moon to keep track of time. Through the ages, astrology has both flirted with fate and danced with death, undergoing a number of reincarnations to find itself where it is today.
Astrology has a mixed reputation in today’s world. As a practice, astrology involves first determining where the planets and stars are in the heavens at any given moment and then interpreting these placements. Charts were originally calculated by hand, until computers took care of the complex mathematical calculations. A modern birth (or natal) chart looks like a round cake with twelve uneven slices. Around the outside of the circle lie the twelve zodiac constellations (the ecliptic). These constellations were chosen by observers over the centuries because, like a great cosmic train track, they mark the path of the Sun and planets as they move through the sky. The twelve sections inside the circle are known as the “houses.” The Sun, Moon, and planets are arrayed in a unique order within the houses, according to the time, date, and place of birth.
Astrology is like a guide for the soul. A birth chart, which is created using the symbols of the sky, details the promise of a life set in motion at the moment of birth. Your birth chart is a map of the sky at the precise time you were born, looking up from the place on Earth where you arrived. Countries, kingships, diseases, and business ventures all have a moment when they begin. When a birth chart is carefully interpreted by a trained astrologer, it provides answers to questions about the fate of the entity the chart represents. Read more »
The Guild celebrates its 19th anniversary in October 2010
Please join us for dinner and a talk on October 14, 2010 at Stefanos Restaurant to celebrate our 19th anniversary. We have booked the downstairs room at Stefanos restaurant for our October meeting, our evening program begins at 6:30PM, and we hope to see you there around 6PM. In order to secure the room for our function, we need to ensure that we have a minimum of 25 people in the audience. We are at 20 as of today. At 7:30 PM Anne Massey will present a talk and a PowerPoint presentation “The Needle of the Compass”—the Lunar Nodes in Action. The luminaries are the two most powerful influences in our life; the Nodes combine their cycles to time not only the eclipses but the unfolding of our lives. The cycle of the nodes is 18.6 years, meaning we might experience five in a course of long life. Nothing works in isolation and these derived points interact with the ones that help define our destiny at fairly short intervals to ensure we keep heading toward True North both individually and collectively. September workshop
‘Progressions and Predictions’ with Kelly Surtees
Saturday, September 11th, 10:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m.
After transits, progressions are the most commonly used predictive tool in modern astrology. We’ll look at where this 500+ yr. old predictive tool came from and what we’re really supposed to do with them. The relationship between transits and progressions is discussed so attendees can deepen their own understanding of dynamic cycles at work. We’ll look at the progressed Moon cycle and its role in affecting other transits/progressions. How does your Saturn return, Uranus midlife transit, etc., differ depending on your progressions? Come find out! Students can learn techniques to help them layer and prioritise different transit and progressed energies to enhance the accuracy of their predictions about recent, current and upcoming cycles.
The flyer for the September workshop and details about Thursday and Friday night talks with Kelly Surtees are under this the link http://www.astrologyguild.com/flyers/2010_Kelly_Surtees.pdf Read the details in the flyer..
Norwac report
I decided to attend NORWAC at the last minute, the moment Uranus moved into Aries, in fact. So did Sukhwinder, our VP, so at the crack of dawn on Saturday we drove down. It was worth it. Heard some wonderful talks, connected with colleagues I haven’t seen in years. Made some connections with potential speakers for us at the Guild. I went there for inspiration and came back with loads of it. Eight of the Guild members (four of the executive) were in attendance—a good showing, I think.
I am doing research into the Mars cycle—claimed to be the one that drives astrologers ‘bonkers’—too late, I hear you thinking. Mars just finished 8 months in Leo today. Mars will be travelling through Virgo-Leo in the course of the next 15 months and then will spend 236 days in Virgo, beginning September 18, 2011. We think of the rhythm of Mars as about 5-7 weeks through a sign, when in fact it is about eight months in one sign (often two signs share this approx. 8-month period) and the remaining 17 months split between eleven signs. Mars also seems to have a preference over the signs, spends the least time in Aquarius, Aries and Pisces, and most in Leo and Virgo. This is the analysis based on 300 years of data. Will let you know what it is once I have plugged in additional centuries.
See you in September
We are taking a summer break, no talks in July and August. However, in the next month or two, plan to put Kelly Surtees’ workshop on your schedule. She is the speaker and presenter for September. Also we are having a celebration of our 19th anniversary in October. We would like to book the downstairs room at Stefanos. In order to do so, we need 25+ members to commit to having dinner on the premises. Please email astrologyguild@shaw.ca and anne@annemassey.ca to express your interest. We will send out more information shortly and collect a non-refundable deposit, which will be used toward your dinner that evening. The registration form for Kelly will be on the site shortly. In the meantime check out her topics… Read more »
